The Ciudad Universitaria: Cultural Patrimony of Humanity

The best virtue of the Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas is the outstanding quality of its architecture. Its historical value resides in the statement of universal themes united by modern architecture along with the acknowledgment that this time period contains elements specificly unique to our human condition. The Ciudad Universitaria was declared a Venezuelan National Heritage site in the year 2000, and a World Cultural Patrimony of Humanity site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001, for the following reasons:

"The Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas constitutes one of the best examples of it's time, in the world, of a university campus conceived through the joining together of a range of architecture, designed integrally by the architect within the modernist ideas of the years 1940s and 50s, and which foresaw so well the future progress of the nation."

"In the combined areas of the Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas the blending of architecture and urban space constitute an artwork of great importance, significance and status, the complete fulfillment of this architect, the most eminent in our nation's history, Carlos Raúl Villanueva."

"The unity of cityscape and architecture of the Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas is now and always will be one of the great prides of all Venezuelan universities, and especially for the Central University of Venezuela (UCV)."
"The Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas contains incalculable artistic value expressed through artworks in the media of plastic and sculpture by important national and international artists, with extraordinary significance to the history of art in Venezuela and the world, for the esthetic enjoyment and the creation of a humanistic sensibility within the university community for all Venezuelans".
"The Ciudad Universitaria of Caracas constitutes an indivisible organic compound of all the architectural elements and open spaces, which through the talent and insight of the architect and artists, were joined during the years of its construction, independent of the variety of styles that are identifiable, and realized within the concept of integration of all the arts."
